Marriage is a community of life and love formed by the union of a man and a woman. The relational and personalistic nature of marriage calls for fidelity. Once established with right reason and consent, marriage becomes indissoluble. Indeed, every marriage incorporates the community at large without negating obligations to past, present and future generations. As taught by the Church and according to the 1983 Code of Canon Law (1035), ‘‘the matrimonial covenant, by which a man and a woman established between themselves a partnership of their whole life and which is ordered by its nature to the good of the spouses and the procreation and education of offspring, has been raised by Christ the Lord to the dignity of a sacrament between the baptized.’’ The importance of marital covenant is seen in the history of creation as contained in Sacred Scripture. Accordingly, man and woman besides being created in the image of and likeness of God, their union holds a central place which later resonates in the wedding feast of the Lamb. Concretely, this is beautifully manifested as lived out by men and women of goodwill.
